Nina Lai
My painting and printmaking practices embrace uniqueness through the process of multiple while recognizing the repetitive characteristics of diverse cultures. To me, multiple is a ritual, a necessary everyday routine. I wake up every day, brush my teeth every day, eat every day, sleep every day; following a stable everyday schedule puts my mind at rest. My personal history inspires my practices: moving homes and having a twin sister. The works become the artifact of the process: me understanding the limitation of languages in communications, finding self-identification and origin when not identifying with one native culture, and promoting individuality in a society that categorizes people into labels.
